Sarisbury 12-year-old is conker queen

A 12-year-old girl from Sarisbury has been crowned the conker queen after a record breaking competition held at Holly Hill Woodland Park this year.

Amy Shanley proved victorious in this year’s competition held by the Friends of Holly Hill Park at the Sarisbury Green woodland park this year.

Amy won the final against six-year-old Alfie Powell from Fareham while eight-year-old Jake Parker was third.

More than 60 players registered to take part in this year’s event – more than has ever taken part in the past – and the competition began in earnest on the banks of the main lake.

Brothers Mike, Dave and Maurie Stares added a lot of colour to the event decked out in conked-decorated outfits to celebrate the revival of the traditional English pastime.

They said they were determined to celebrate the revival in the game which they said had dwindled in popularity in recent years with schools banning it and health and safety concerns.
