An amazing O2 stage debut for MELO

Girl group MELO are still coming to terms with having the chance to sing at the O2 arena like so many globally famous artists.

MELO performed on London's O2 stage at the Open Mic UK competition

Singers Molly Scott, Emily Stewart, Olivia Tambini and Kelly Childs performed to thousands of music enthusiasts – and industry judges – at the London stage in the Open Mic UK National Grand Final competition.

Even though the group of former Brookfield School students did not win, Emily said the experience gained from the show was invaluable.

“It was amazing,” said the 17-year-old of Brook Lane, Warsash.

“I felt it was the best show we’d ever done. I enjoyed it. I was grinning all the way through the performance.

“Just being back stage, walking through the corridors and using the back stage routes that so many great artists have used was so inspirational and exciting. It was nice that it was our turn to do it. Hopefully we’ll be back again.

“I wasn’t so nervous about the performance. I was more nervous about the results. They had us all lined up in our categories and announced the top three.”

The group of 17-year-olds had beaten around 9,000 performers for a chance of winning the title – which went to 16-year-old R&B artist Shak.

“I was gutted really because I’d felt like we’d done so well,” said Emily. “But when you put it into perspective we got through to the top 21 out of 9,000. When I look back at it we did amazingly to get there.

“It’s been an amazing experience and we’ve improved so much from it. We’re a lot more confident. Before we were a functional group, all dressed in black, singing together, but now we’re a fully-fledged girl band.”

Emily said it was the group’s great friendship and the support from their families which spurred them through the competition and on to new adventures. MELO will be writing altogether to produce original material and hope to record an EP.

“We’re going from strength to strength,” added Emily.

“We’ve been friends for ages and definitely after this competition we’re so close and we’ve got such a great bond, and I know it sounds cheesy, but we just have a good laugh together.

“Thank you so much to all of our families for going out of their way to take us to rehearsals and for making t-shirts and banners with our name on them.

“I think they think it’s something they can tell the grand-kids.”
